Saint John – ‘The Most Marvellous Night of the Year’ in A Coruña

Each year people all over the world eagerly await the summer solstice – the shortest night of the year in the height of summer. However nowhere celebrates it quite like A Coruña in north-western Spain, with The Bonfires of Saint John (Hogueras de San Juan) - a dazzling spectacle of light and fire.

Declared to be of National Tourist Interest, this spectacular celebration draws in thousands of visitors from all over the world. The main events take place from the evening of 23rd to 24th June, however the city has a jam-packed programme of concerts, parades, children’s shows and culinary events in the week leading up to the big night.

Throughout the day locals and visitors flock towards the city’s two main beaches, Orzán and Riazor, as well as the various tiny coves and inlets scattered along A Coruña’s sea promenade, trying to get the best view of ‘the most marvellous night of the year’.

When darkness falls, bonfires lining the beaches and the city’s districts begin to set an atmospheric glow in anticipation of the stroke of midnight, when the ‘Meiga Mayor’ – or Queen Witch’ – lights the main bonfire. The Queen Witch is a young woman chosen to represent the city.

From then on, the city is transformed into a stunning spectacle for all, with over one hundred thousand bonfires and various fireworks displays illuminating A Coruña’s skies.

Market stalls are scattered around the area showcasing their fresh fish straight from auction, and with A Coruña being Spain’s biggest fresh fish port, the stalls are a focal point for visitors in search of culinary speciality, sardines.

As well as gastronomic traditions, locals and visitors get involved with the ritual of washing with the ‘magic flowers of Saint John’, which, if followed, is said to make all dreams come true and ward off evil for the remainder of the year. To follow the ritual, a collection of wild flowers and herbs must be left in water overnight, and once they have collected the early morning dew of Saint John’s Feast Day, the aromatic water is used as a face wash.

Avant-garde eatery El Celler de Can Roca in Girona, Spain, was granted the No. 1 spot on Restaurant Magazine's annual ranking of the world's 50 best restaurants during a ceremony in London on Monday.

The three Michelin-starred El Celler de Can Roca run by the three Roca brothers – Josep, Jordi and Joan, took the number one spot from innovative Danish restaurant Noma that has held the honour for the past three years after claiming the title from Spanish restaurant elBulli in 2010.

El Celler de Can Roca has also recently announced ground breaking plans for a culinary opera called Somni.

Somni, which translates to dream, will be a dynamic multi-sensory private dining experience with food and drink, video, robots, music and card games, as reported in the Spanish newspaper El País.

The brothers first announced the project in June last year with food website FineDiningLovers.com revealing that the restaurant would be a special igloo-shaped venue in El Celler’s basement.

Other Spanish eateries included in this year's 50 best list were Mugaritz at No.4, Arzak at No.8, Quique Dacosta at No. 26 and Asador Etxebarri at No. 44.

The festival which takes place this year from 8th to 19th May sees Cordovan patios elaborately adorned with colourful flowers, water features and hanging baskets. The celebration is a true feast of the senses with orange blossom, jasmine, carnations and geraniums filling the streets with floral scents and hinting that summer is on its way.

Historically flowers and water features set around a central courtyard or patio helped keep Cordovan houses cool during the summer months. The residents took great pride in their colourful displays and the Patio Contest started in 1918.

There are a vast range of patios and courtyards to visit, from those owned by private families to the patios of the great monuments such as the Viana Palace which has 12 individually adorned patios representing five centuries of history.

As would be expected, the Patio Contest in Córdoba is supported by a host of entertainment and many of the larger patio hosts flamenco concerts and performances by local singers.

José Pizarro set to wow the literati with a pop up tapas bar at the Hay Festival

Tapas España by José Pizarro will offer a stunning range of dishes from London’s favourite Spanish chef, based on his menus at his popular Bermondsey Street bar José. Dishes have been designed to delight guests and to highlight the diversity of Spain’s many twists on traditional tapas. Dishes will change on a daily basis depending on what looks good at market that morning, but typical dishes include Gazpacho with Apples & Cockles, Empanadas, big, juicy Gordal olives stuffed with orange, Estofado (a sort of rustic stew), Grilled Squid and José’s popular Lamb Chops.

Spain has long been known for its excellent cuisine ranging from its culinary constants such as jamón and olive oil to the pintxos of San Sebastián, the paella of Valencia and the suckling pig of Segovia. The basis of Spanish cuisine is good quality ingredients and simple home cooking, both key elements of José’s cooking.

As always, José will use the very best meat and fish available to him and he is keen to use as much local produce as possible in order to keep a check on the food miles. Lamb will certainly come from Wales and he is also considering showcasing other locally produced food and drink such as Welsh Cider.

Wales shares a proportion of their ancestry with Northern Spain and even today, there are many parallels. With lush green and verdant scenery, the fertile soils in Wales and Northern Spain provide a wealth of fresh vegetables and happy grazing livestock, which twinned with an elongated coastline, provides an abundance of mouth-watering ingredients, suitably fitting for a Hay Festival pop-up.

In order to be true to his roots, José has insisted that the wine list carries some of his best-loved sherries, cavas and wines, reining from Spanish regions including Andalucía, Cataluña, Galicia and the Basque Country.
The design of Tapas España by José Pizarro will be sympathetic to his current restaurant sites and will be comfortable and welcoming – just like a true tapas bar.

José said of the collaboration, “I am thrilled to be able to take what we do at José in London into one of the most exciting literary and food festivals in the UK. I have long been a fan of the festival and it really is a dream come true to be able to take the food of my country there and to represent Spanish cuisine on behalf of the Spanish Tourist Office.”

The pop up will also be used for book signings and tasting events. These are TBC – please keep an eye on this page for more information.

El Hierro in the Canary Islands now offers free Wi-Fi access across the entire island, making it the first ‘Smart Island’ in the world.

The Wi-Fi network has been implemented by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism with the aim of encouraging visitors to use social networks to share their experiences on the island.

There are 26 Wi-Fi access points across El Hierro in towns and residential areas, which are identifiable with signs in English, Spanish and German. Visitors can also connect to the Tourist Information Office and download the app ‘El Hierro is following you’ so they can pinpoint all the access points on the island.

The Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism has aimed to make the project as sustainable as possible, by blending antennas into the landscape using volcanic rocks rather than bricks. Additionally, renewable energy is being used to operate the Wi-Fi in areas of El Hierro that don’t have electricity or 3G access such as El Julan and Cala de Tacoron.

The Wi-Fi network has also been built to help with island management and programmes are in development to monitor traffic, control forest and house fires and manage rubbish and drinking water quality with sensors.

Last Monday 11th March, the Anglo-Spanish Society hosted a wonderful black-tie gala dinner at the RAC Club, with Mayor of London, Boris Johnson as their special guest of honour and key speaker for the evening.

Boris, who has now been touted as one of Spain’s non-official ambassadors after posing for photos with the iconic Spanish Tourist Board logo, entertained the audience with stories of his travels around Spain in his youth. The Major of London concluded his spirited speech by jokingly suggesting that Spain´s relationship with the UK is so good that Spain should consider leaving the euro and joining the pound…much to the humour of the Spanish attendees.

The Anglo-Spanish Society aims to create understanding and friendship between Britain and Spain and does so by their great knowledge of culture, history and customs in Spain and the UK.

The event, which was fully booked over a month in advance, also welcomed His Excellency The Spanish Ambassador Federico Trillo Figueroa, as well as various other movers and shakers with a special interest in relations between Spain and the UK.

The attendees bid farewell to Dame Denise Holt, who has served as Chairman of the Society for the last three years and will be succeeded by well know Anglo-Spanish author and journalist Jimmy Burns. The evening was sponsored by The Spanish Tourist Office, as well as corporate sponsors Santander Universities, BBVA UK, Ferrovial and Telefonica and was a huge success, with all profits going towards one of the Society’s charitable causes – the outstanding scholarship scheme for postgraduate students.

Easter In Spain

Semana Santa, or Holy Week, is the last week of Lent and undoubtedly one of the country’s most important festivals since it forms an integral part of Spanish identity. Most Spanish cities, towns and villages have their own unique, centuries-old traditions that combine religious and festive events in the lead up to Easter. Religious processions through the streets attract crowds of people, where participants are adorned in distinctive hooded robes and carry processional candles, wooden crosses or other religious sculptures. Music, art and colour are all important features of the festival but play a distinct role depending on the region.

Some of the grandest processions take place in Andalucia, particularly Malaga and Seville, and involve a whole week of parades and special services. Malaga hosts some of Spain’s livelier processions, where instead of meditation and silence, cheer, applause and spontaneous saetas (flamenco verses) are heard as the tronos (platforms bearing holy images) pass. The dramatic Easter celebrations in Seville are organised by over 50 different brotherhoods, which carry life-sized pasos (sculptural representations of events from Christ’s Passion) from Seville’s churches to the Cathedral.

The fiesta in Lorca during Semana Santa is also known as ‘the Whites and the Blues’, representing two major brotherhoods that have competed every year since 1855 to see who can stage the most lavish Semana Santa display. Their members parade through the streets in their characteristic robes to the sound of drums and music carrying figures and scenes from the bible and from ancient civilisations. The grand procession includes people dressed up as Roman emperors, Egyptian troops and Roman Gods, as well as chariots, carriages and religious sculptures.

Zamora is one of the most evocative places in the country to watch the hooded processions, where the emotive atmosphere is only broken by the sound of trumpets and drums that accompany the religious figures as they pass. Similarly, Easter celebrations in Cuenca are renowned throughout Spain for the eerie, silent parades through the old town accompanied by the echo of the bugle through the streets.

No other country in the world celebrates Easter as diversely and beautifully as Spain and Semana Santa is a great reflection of the huge cultural wealth that is offered across all four corners of the country.

An added bonus of the ticket system is that it is a fully electronic issuing process; no print-outs are necessary and bookings can be shown on a mobile phone or tablet. In its first seven months, 5,527 Renfe Spain Passes have been sold, 97% of which were adult tickets.

The 10 year anniversary of Sadler’s Wells’ Flamenco Festival

From 15th March, Flamenco Festival will be celebrating the 10 year anniversary at Sadlers Wells featuring a spectacular 10 day programme of the very best dancers and musicians that flamenco has to offer.

In the lead up to the festival, an 80 person-strong flamenco flash mob took to St Pancras International last Friday treating passers-by to an impromptu flamenco routine.

Ahead of the festival, the Spanish Tourist Office speaks to Miguel Marin, Director of the Flamenco Festival about what to expect from the 10 year anniversary flamenco programme.

	1) This year, Sadler’s Wells celebrates 10 years of the Flamenco Festival, what is in store?

This is a very special year for the Flamenco Festival; it will open with Eva Yerbabuena, famed for her speed, power and dramatic footwork. Male dancer Farruquito follows, hailed by the New York Times as “one of the greatest flamenco dancers of the century’”, showing the purest view of flamenco with a fabulous guest artist, Karime Amaya (nephew of Carmen Amaya).

The show also sees the international premiere of the new album by Spanish flamenco singer Estrella Morente, praised by critics since the launch of her debut album in 2011.

Exceptional modern flamenco artist Rocio Molina will present her new show bringing a sharp and dynamic flair to the festival, whilst Multiple Latin Grammy-winner and world-renowned flamenco guitarist Tomatito returns to Sadler’s Wells following his sell-out success at the Flamenco Festival in 2011.

Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía offers a big-format production with 19 great performers showcasing the magic of Andalucia. Alternatively maverick flamenco dancer Israel Galvan demonstrates his intricate contemporary works.
Finally an all-star gala event represents the best of flamenco in all its fiery glory.

It’s worth mentioning that these performances are just on the main stage at Sadler´s Wells, we also have set up a range of other activities, such as the new series Beyond Flamenco where for example Rocio Molina and Olga Pericet will showcase their works with different British artists.

	2) Who are the key people to look out for?

All performers this year bring something different to the Flamenco Festival. It really depends on what you are looking for, if you are looking for traditional flamenco then Farruquito is a great one to watch; if you are looking for a big format performance, Ballet Flamenco de Andalucia; if you are more into the new waves of flamenco then Eva Yerbabuena, Rocio Molina, Israel Galvan Gala Flamenca and the Beyond Flamenco Series all offer a perfect blend of passion and strong performance. Finally for flamenco music Estrella Morente and Tomatito are two of the best.

	3) What is the most popular form of flamenco?

The most famous form of flamenco is Bulerias, the dance in its general form, but for some time now, flamenco has grown to incorporate singing and the guitar. Flamenco is a world language although it doesn’t need to be understand, it is more about feelings.

	4) Where would you recommend watching flamenco in Spain and why?

It depends again of what you are looking for. There are some very good “tablaos” where you can see very good dancers for example “corral de la moreria” in Madrid. For a more professional format, do not look at specific places, look for the names of the artists (such as those who are performing at Flamenco Festival).

	5) Finally, what is your favourite place in Spain and why?

For me my favourite place in Spain is Seville, there are many fantastic places to visit there, such as; Teatro de la Maestranza for Flamenco Shows, Plaza Doña Elvira, Teatro Central, Barrio de Santa Cruz, Calle Betis and Edificio Tabacalera.

1901 was a momentous and turbulent year for the young Picasso. It was the year he launched his debut 64-piece exhibition in Paris, which led to the start of his remarkable career as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century.

This new exhibition showcases the key pieces from his Vollard exhibition with the prominent dealer Ambroise Vollard, as well as displaying the drastic change in Picasso’s art during the second half of 1901, known as his ‘Blue Period’. During this time, Picasso was suffering due to the suicide of his close friend, and so used this pain as inspiration for what is now classed as some of his first and finest masterpieces.

Together, these pieces demonstrate Picasso’s wish to reinvent and transform the design of modern artists such as Van Gogh, Degas and Toulouse-Lautrec.

Becoming Picasso: Paris 1901 offers the chance to consider in detail the early development of one of the towering figures of 20th century art at a time when he was still just a young Spanish hopeful in Paris.

To see more of the fantastic artwork of Picasso, The Picasso Museums in Barcelona and Malaga display a vast array of his masterpieces, to give an even greater insight into his works. From 30th May, The Picasso Museum in Barcelona will open the ‘Yo Picasso. Self Portraits’ exhibition to explore the various self-portrait techniques he used throughout his career. From 24th June, the Picasso Museum in Malaga will host a ‘Family Album’ exhibition, depicting 40 of Picasso’s works featuring his family and loved ones, emphasising the importance of the family notion within his creativity.

A special exhibition of works by 17th Century Spanish artist Bartolomé Esteban Murillo is now on show at London’s Dulwich Picture Gallery, fresh from Madrid’s Museo del Prado.

The exhibition explores the fruitful friendship between Murillo and Justino de Neve, the canon of Seville Cathedral.

Now in London, the selection of 17 paintings – five of which were restored especially for the exhibition – includes religious and devotional works as well as allegories and portraits and is the first major showing of Murillo’s works since 1982.

Produced at the height of the artist’s career, the paintings were mainly commissioned for Seville’s many churches and one work, the Penitent St Peter, was thought lost until it was discovered in a private collection in early 2012.

The exhibition will be joined by a special display of Dulwich Picture Gallery’s own collection of Murillo’s which have undergone some enlightening conservation including the discovery of a newly confirmed Murillo.

The exhibition is currently on show in Dulwich at Britain’s first purpose-built public art gallery and runs until May 19. Entry costs £11 for adults, £10 for seniors and £5 concessions. Children enter free.

A second, free exhibition – Murillo at the Wallace Collection: Painting of the Spanish Golden Age – will run simultaneously at the Wallace Collection in London’s Manchester Square.

It will include a collection of Murillo works put together by the 4th Marquess of Hertford as well as pieces by his workshop and associates such as Francisco Meneses Osorio and Juan Simon Gutierrez.

Due to take place between February 7 and 17 this year, Cadiz carnival is a huge street party, with gastronomic events, fireworks, fancy dress, parades and street performances.

The two most important parades are the Gran Cabalgata, on the first Sunday of the feria, and the Cabalgata del Humor, which takes place on the last weekend. Both events attract thousands of dressed up spectators who get involved as they make their way through the old town.

Agrupaciones - choirs of up to 40 singers - and chirigotas - satirical musical groups - also take part in the Fallas Contest, the music festival held in the Gran Teatro Falla ahead of the carnival.

In the run-up to the party they practise their humurous songs, often poking fun at politicians and current affairs, at open air events across the city, creating a sense of anticipation throughout the month.

The Grand Final is then held on the first Friday of carnival and lasts until the following morning.

The Cadiz Carnival is said to have started in the 16th Century as sailors from the port city returned from Genoa and Venice with tales of their carnival celebrations. Now the Cadiz event is so famous it has been declared to be of International Tourist Interest.

Tourists visiting during the colourful street party are encouraged to dress up and join in as much as the locals, although booking accommodation in advance is essential, due to its popularity.

The Vineyards of Galicia – A wine tour

	Ruta de vino Rías Baixas

Tradition says that wine cultivation in Rías Baixas stems from the monks of the Cistercian monastery of Armenteira (Meis). Science reveals however that viticulture already existed long before the monks arrived. Nowadays the Rías Baixas has the greatest Galician Designation of Origin, not only due to the number of wineries but also thanks to the sheer size of the vineyards, which stretch across 33 municipalities of the western half of Galicia.

The Designation of Origin Rías Baixas is formed by 5 sub-areas; O Rosal, Condado de Tea, Soutomaior, Val do Salnés and Ribeira de Ulla, forming part of a discontinuous territory that stretches from the southern tip of Pontevedra up the eastern Atlantic coastline to the southern part of the A Coruña province. Each wine territory offers a rich wine heritage giving the wines an excellent quality but also brings a distinct personality reflected by varied landscapes and artistic and historical references such as the pretty coastal town of Cambados which hosts the annual wine festival or the Armenteira monastery.

The wines of the D.O. Rías Baixas are characterised by the native grapes, mainly white, with the variety monopolising approximately 95% of the production. Other white grape varieties include Loureira, Marqués, white Caiño and Treixadura. Red wines include Caiño, Espadeiro, Loureiro and Sousón.
	www.rutadelvinoriasbaixas.com

Ruta del Vino de O Ribeiro

O Ribeiro is situated in the most western part of the province of Ourense, in the confluence of the Miño, Avia, Arnoia and Barbantiño River valleys. Since the Middle Ages, O Ribeiro has been linked to wine farming and is said to be the principal wine-producing reference of the Christian kingdoms from 9th century until 17th century. The area is considered to be one of the most representative of Galician architecture, and boasts a beautifully preserved artistic heritage.

The Designation of Origin O Ribeiro has an extension of approximately 6,67 acres of vineyards located in the municipalities of Ribadavia, A Arnoia, Castrelo de Miño, Carballeda de Avia, Leiro, Cenlle, Beade, Punxín and Cortegada, and in part of Boborás, San Amaro, Toén, Carballiño and Ourense. The vineyard extends from 75 to 400 metres in altitude with deep valleys and terraces following the landscape’s contour.

White grapes are predominantly farmed such as Treixadura, Loureira, Torrentés, Albariño, Albilla, Godello as well as foreign grapes such as Macabeo and Palomino. The most popular red is Caiño, complemented by Ferrón, Sousón, Brancellao, Mencía, Garnacha and Tempranillo. The white wine of O Ribeiro is known to be clean and transparent with a subtle smell and exquisite fragrance of flowers and fruits. The reds are alive, with a cherry red jewel tone, intense on the nose and broad and expressive in the mouth.
	www.rutadelvinoribeiro.com

	Ruta del vino Ribeira Sacra

The Ribeira Sacra is formed by a group of 20 municipalities belonging to the southern part of the province of Lugo and the northern part of Ourense brought together by the Miño, Sil and Cabe Rivers.

Collectively the areas of D.O Ribeira Sacra offer a valuable heritage of monasteries including those of San Estevo de Ribas de Sil (which is now a Parador), Santa Cristina, San Pedro de Rocas, Xunqueira de Espadanedo, Montederramo and Ferreira de Pantón.

Representing 5, 2 % of the wine production in Galicia, Ribeira Sacra maintains a strong essence of Galicia and is linked to Saint James’ Way, the internationally known Camino Francés (French Way) (through the subzone Ribeiras de Miño, in the Lugo municipalities of Paradela and Portomarín), and that of the so called Camino de Invierno (Winter Way), where the subzones of Quiroga, Amandi and Chantada are located.

The preferential varieties of white grapes are Albariño, Treixadura, Doña Blanca, Godello, Loureira and Torrontés. Among the red grapes, which are the majority, the most favourable are Mencía, Brancellao and Merezao with some production of Garnacha, Mouratón or Negreda.

The white wines are fruity with a fine touch of acidity, a slight aftertaste and a delicate presence on the palate. The reds stand out for their clean, elegant and intense fragrances and their brilliant cherry colour and purple trim.
	www.ribeirasacra.org

	Ruta del vino Valdeorras

Valdeorras is the most Eastern region of the province of Ourense, bordering with León. The wealth of natural resources and fertile soils has attracted settlers throughout the ages and the region offers abundant remains from the megalithic era.

The arrival of the Romans drastically changed the valley, shifting communities to the plains and constructing one of the most important roads of the Iberian Peninsula, the “Vía XVIII” or “Vía Nova” [later used as Camino Real or Camino de Invierno (Winter Way) on the Saint James Way].

The D.O Valdeorras has a significant Roman imperial legacy including the tunnel at Montefurado, excavated in order to divert the river’s course to enable the extraction of gold that the river dragged along. Today the tunnel can be seen from the N-120 road, sitting a few metres above.

This D.O. Valdeorras is characterised for traditional methods of wine production, including ageing in caves excavated in clay. Many of these ancient wineries have been preserved for centuries in their original state displaying singular chimneys, known as refugallo (waste, residue) which have become a curious element in the Valdeorras’ landscape.

The preferential variety of white is Godello, accompanied Doña Blanca which they call Moza Fresca (fresh dame). For reds, the main grapes are Mencía and Merenzao which are accompanied by Sousón, Albarello, Garnacha Tintorera and Gran Negro. The Godello variety offers an intense fruity and floral fragrance, very well structured in the mouth. The red Mencía produces wines that are scarlet in colour, with elegant wild fruit aromas and soft corpulence.
	www.dovaldeorras.tv

	Ruta del vino Monterrei

The D.O. Monterrei is located in the southeast part of the province of Ourense, bordering the Portuguese frontier. The strength of Monterrei is the rich architectural heritage, twinned with the lush patchwork landscapes.
One of Monterrei’s most emblematic monuments is the outstanding XII century Condes de Monterrei castle situated in a high part of Valle, near the city of Verín. Built by Alfonso Henríquez, the castle played an important role throughout the Portuguese-Spanish wars, having been strategically built close to the border.

Verίn is also famous for its ‘Entroido’ (Galician carnival) which takes place in February featuring the “Cigarróns”, or masked figures typical of the Valley of Monterrei and seen by ethnographer Taboada Chivite as a mockery of the tax collectors sent out by the Counts who lived in the castle and ruled over the area.

The fertile soils, humid climate, high vine density and the yield of the local grape varieties means that wine production is high and of excellent quality. White grape varieties are dominant, especially Doña Blanca, Treixadura, Verdello and Godello. Of the smaller proportion of red grapes, the most common is Arauxa (the local name for Tempranillo).

A new high-speed rail route, connecting the Catalan capital of Barcelona with the French border is being trialled ahead of its opening in April.

Spain's national train operator Renfe has confirmed it is testing the track to make sure it is ready for a new high-speed AVE cross-border service to the French city of Perpignan.

The trials are being carried on the newest part of the route connecting Barcelona, Girona and Figueres.

Last month an AVE train travelled underground in Barcelona for the first time, using a new tunnel which connects the city's Sants station with La Sagrera.

There is already a high-speed link between Figueres and Perpignan and another connecting Barcelona and Madrid.

Once the final section between Barcelona and Figueres is completed, passengers will be able to travel into France from the Spanish capital much more easily.

It will also make journeys from Barcelona to other European cities much faster. It is estimated that passengers will be able to reach Geneva and Lyon in just four hours.

The track is designed to take speeds of up to 350km per hour, although Renfe mainly runs its trains at 310km per hour.

Journey times to Girona and Figueres will take 39 and 55 minutes respectively from Barcelona, making it quicker and easier to travel straight up to Paris, connecting in Perpignan with the French high-speed TGV trains.

Some British companies have already started selling high-speed train journeys to Barcelona and the Costa Brava in anticipation of the new links.
